Learning Through Theatre

Our school participates every year in the cultural activities organized by the Cultural Association of Granollers. One of these educational shows is always a play in English that the students work on beforehand in class with the teacher.

Last Friday the 22nd April, the 1st, 2nd and 3rd graders went to La Fabrica to see the play Pinocchio. Afterwards, the 4th, 5th and 6th graders attended a performance of Fearless John. Both plays were performed by the educational theatre company Theatre4schools.

During the dramatization, the actors encouraged the students to sing the songs that had been previously worked on in the classroom and, once the show was over, they were given the opportunity to ask questions to the actors, while continuing to practisse their oral competence in English.

Let's go to the theatre!

As every school year students from Escola Ronçana went to La Fàbrica to see a theatre play in English. The 1st, 2nd and 3rd graders saw Goldilocks and the Three Bears and the 4th, 5th and 6th graders saw Ulysses.

Goldilocks and the Three Bears is a British fairy tale that tells the story of a little girl named Goldilocks who enters the forest home of three bears whilst they are away. She sits in their chairs, eats some of their porridge and sleeps in one of their beds. When the bears return and discover her, she wakes up, jumps out of the window, and is never seen again.

Ulysses is the hero of Homer's Odyssey, an epic poem that recounts his adventures when he returned victorious from the Trojan War. It took him ten years to return to Ithaca to meet his wife Penelope and his son Telemachus again.

Students of the school were able to enjoy a dramatization of the play, adapted by the    educational theatre company Theatre4schools, on Monday 9th March.

These plays were previously worked at school in English classrooms from a teaching guide provided by the same theatre company. Students were invited to sing the songs and become secondary actors during the play. It was a great experience!

Theatre in English

Last Thursday 31st January, students from Escola Ronçana went to La Fàbrica to see a theatre play in English. The 1st, 2nd and 3r graders saw Hansel and Gretel and the 4th, 5th and 6th graders saw Treasure Island.

Hansel and Gretel is a well-known German fairy tale recorded by the Brothers Grimm. The tale has been adapted to various media such as an opera or a theatre play.
Hansel and Gretel are the children of a poor woodcutter. When a famine settles over the land, the woodcutter's wife (stepmother to Hansel and Gretel) decides to take the children into the woods and leave them there. After days of wandering, they discover a large cottage built of gingerbread, cakes, and candy, with window panes of clear sugar. The children begin to eat the roof, when the door opens and a woman invites them to go inside, with the promise of soft beds, delicious food, and a hot bath. However, this kindly woman is indeed a bad witch who wants to cook and eat them. One day, the witch prepares the oven to cook Hansel. She asks Gretel to check when the fire is hot enough. Gretel pretends she does not understand what she means. The witch gets angry and demonstrates, and Gretel pushes her into the oven. Gretel frees Hansel from the cage and the pair discover a vase full of treasure and precious stones. putting the jewels into their clothing, the children set off for home. Their father is happy to see them safe. With the witch's treasure, they all live happily ever after.

Treasure Island is an adventure novel by Scottish author RobertLouis Stevenson and it is one of the most frequently dramatized of all novels.

The story begins at ‘The Admiral Benbow’ inn. Jim Hawkins, an enthusiastic boy, wants to travel around the world and live new adventures. One day a mysterious stranger called Billy Bones dies in the inn. He’s got a treasure map and Jim gets it. Jim takes the map to Squire Trelawnet and Doctor Livesey who realize that it shows where Captain Flint, a pirate, buried his treasure. They decide to go and find the treasure on a ship called the ‘Hispaniola’. However, the ship’s cook, Long John Siler, and the rest of the crew want to kill them and keep the treasure map. Once they arrive on Skeleton Island, Jim, Dr Livesey and Squire try to escape from them. They are aided by Ben Gunn, a pirate marooned on the island. Jim and the others ultimately prevail over the pirates and return home with the treasure. Silver notably escapes with some of the money.
